Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By turns hilarious and poignant, The Dakota Winters is a family drama, a page-turning social novel, and a tale of a critical moment in the history of New York City in the year leading up to John Lennon’s assassination. ‘Conjures a gritty, populous, affectionate portrait of 1979 New York City’ Jennifer Egan, author of Manhattan Beach It’s the fall of 1979 when 23-year-old Anton Winter, back from the Peace Corps and on the mend from a nasty bout of malaria, returns to his childhood home in the Dakota Building in New York City. Anton’s father, the famous late-night host Buddy Winter is there to greet him, himself recovering from a breakdown. Before long Anton is swept up in an effort to reignite Buddy’s stalled career, a mission that takes him from the gritty streets of New York, to the slopes of the Lake Placid Olympics, to the Hollywood Hills, to the blue waters of the Bermuda Triangle, and brings him into close quarters with the likes of Johnny Carson, Ted and Joan Kennedy, and a seagoing John Lennon. But the more Anton finds himself enmeshed in his father’s professional and spiritual reinvention, the more he questions his own path, and fissures in the Winter family begin to threaten their close bond. "The first great novel of 2019"? GQ ‘Deft, funny, touching, and sharply observed, a marvel of tone, and a skillful evocation of a dark passage in the history of New York City, when all the fearful ironies of the world we live in now first came stalking into view’ Michael Chabon, author of Moonglow 'It spins and dazzles. And holds on tenaciously to the human heart.' Providence Journal 'In Tom Barbash’s The Dakota Winters, you can practically hear Lennon’s signature cackle, feel the tickle of his ponytailed hair, smell the salt air.' The Washington Post ‘This is a crazily charming novel … I wanted to begin a new life in these pages, with these characters. I wanted to trade worlds with them. This is a wise and seductive story that feels truer than true, as only the very finest fiction does’ Walter Kirn, author of Up in the Air “Seamlessly mingling historical figures with invented ones, Tom Barbash conjures a gritty, populous, affectionate portrait of 1979 New York City: the site of his subtly captivating paean to filial love.” (Jennifer Egan, author of Manhattan Beach )? “Excellent…. At its heart, this is a story about family bonds and a pivotal time in New York.” (Rolling Stone)

Book excerpt: The epic and intimate story of a family living in the famed Upper West Side apartment building, The Dakota, in the year leading up to the John Lennon assassination, a moment that shaped a generation. The Dakota Winters is at once a family saga, a page-turning social novel, and a tale about a critical moment in the history of New York City and the country at large. Dickensian in scope, the story is faithful to the real events that happened in the city and the private lives of the Lennons. Above all, THE DAKOTA WINTERS is about a family in flux, living, in their view, at the centre of the world. Praise for Stay Up With Me: 'A deeply humane, witty and highly acclaimed story collection that belongs to the tradition of the classic American story' Independent on Sunday

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Amish novels set during the Great Depression, by bestselling Amish romance author Linda Byler Follow feisty and independent Hannah as she grows from a fifteen-year-old girl in a covered wagon headed west with her family, all the way through marriage, tragedy, and her ongoing pursuit of home and belonging. In this unique and gripping trilogy, Hannah's struggles to reconcile her Amish faith with her fiery and rebellious spirit parallel the relentless hardships of life as a homesteader in North Dakota, including famine, blizzards, fires, and more. The Homestead: When Hannah's family, hit hard by the Great Depression, loses their farm, Hannah’s father loads his family and what little they have left into their covered wagon, dreaming of a better future far west of Lancaster. They settle in North Dakota, hundreds of miles from any Amish community. But his visions of success are shattered by the reality that his knowledge of farming in Lancaster isn’t of much use in Midwestern soil. With the fields barren and her family on the verge of starvation, independent and stubborn Hannah is forced to seek help from charismatic ranch hand Clay Jenkins and his family. Hope on the Plains: Hannah’s family is finally feeling settled. The cattle business is doing well, and other Amish families have moved into the area. Feeling betrayed by Clay Jenkins and unimpressed with her own father, Hannah is hesitant to trust the men around her. Jerry Riehl, intrigued by her intelligence and strong will, will try anything to earn Hannah’s respect. Home Is Where the Heart Is: Despite tragedy and almost unimaginable hardship, Hannah and her new husband are leading their Amish friends and family in their homesteading venture. But one final blow leaves Hannah grappling with her faith, struggling to understand who she is and how she fits in to the world around her. What will it take for her to feel like she’s home, like she finally belongs somewhere?

Book excerpt: This book presents two of the most important traditions of the Dakota people, the Red Road and the Holy Dance, as told by Samuel Mniyo and Robert Goodvoice, two Dakota men from the Wahpeton Dakota Nation near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Their accounts of these central spiritual traditions and other aspects of Dakota life and history go back seven generations and help to illuminate the worldview of the Dakota people for the younger generation of Dakotas, also called the Santee Sioux. “The Good Red Road,” an important symbolic concept in the Holy Dance, means the good way of living or the path of goodness. The Holy Dance (also called the Medicine Dance) is a Dakota ceremony of earlier generations. Although it is no longer practiced, it too was a central part of the tradition and likely the most important ceremonial organization of the Dakotas. While some people believe that the Holy Dance is sacred and that the information regarding its subjects should be allowed to die with the last believers, Mniyo believed that these spiritual ceremonies played a key role in maintaining connections with the spirit world and were important aspects of shaping the identity of the Dakota people. In The Red Road and Other Narratives of the Dakota Sioux, Daniel Beveridge brings together Mniyo and Goodvoice’s narratives and biographies, as well as songs of the Holy Dance and the pictographic notebooks of James Black (Jim Sapa), to make this volume indispensable for scholars and members of the Dakota community.

Book excerpt: Winter counts?pictorial calendars by which Plains Indians kept track of their past?marked each year with a picture of a memorable event.øTheøLakota, or Western Sioux, recorded many different events in their winter counts, but all include ?the year the stars fell,? the spectacular Leonid meteor shower of 1833?34. This volume is an unprecedented assemblage of information on the important collection of Lakota winter counts at the Smithsonian, a core resource for the study of Lakota history and culture. Fourteen winter counts are presented in detail, with a chapter devoted to the newly discovered Rosebud Winter Count. Together these counts constitute a visual chronicle of over two hundred years of Lakota experience as recorded by Native historians. ø A visually stunning book, The Year the Stars Fell features full-color illustrations of the fourteen winter counts plus more than 900 detailed images of individual pictographs. Explanations, provided by their nineteenth-century Lakota recorders, are arranged chronologically to facilitate comparison among counts. The book provides ready access to primary source material, and serves as an essential reference work for scholars as well as an invaluable historical resource for Native communities.

Book excerpt: The area's extreme remoteness, great size, and sparse population have shaped the North Dakota character from the beginning of settlement a century ago. Theirs was not an easy land to master; and of those who tried, it demanded strength, endurance, and few illusions, but it had rewards. Today, as world shortages of food and fuel raise new possibilities--and new problems--North Dakotans face the future with the cautious optimism they learned long ago in sod houses and cold winters on the far northern edge of their country.
