This intriguing book retains its momentum from beginning to end. The mysterious disappearances of people in the mist-enshrouded mountains of the Eastern Highlands are used effectively to lay bare much of a dark past. It contrasts events in the new Zimbabwe of the nineties against Rhodesia and a fractured pre-colonial history. It kept me spellbound. Africa holds a unique fascination amidst its exotic landscape and Cliff McIlwaine captures and brings together an assortment of colourful characters from different cultural backgrounds which enhance the dramatic tensions. A magical combination of the prosaic and the spiritual creates fascinating insights into the social, political and historical ethos of Zimbabwe. An enjoyable novel which certainly held my attention. Download Crash Politics and Antiracism PDF Full or another Format written by Philip S. S. Howard and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crash Politics and Antiracism argues that race and racism continue to script the social fabric in Euro-North America. While dominant discourses claim that we have made significant progress away from racial bigotry, there is no shortage of evidence that inequitable ideologies of race prevail. Similarly, mainstream cinematic productions have mass appeal, yet tend to demonstrate and cement the racial ideologies that circulate in society. As such, they can be used either for the propagation of dominant ideologies or in the development of critical consciousness. Crash Politics and Antiracism does the latter, understanding the award-winning film Crash as an especially interesting pedagogical site, for while to many it offers a fresh analysis of race and racism, the antiracist analyses in this book suggest that it recycles oppressive understandings of race. The essays in this collection, written from a variety of racial locations, provide readings of Crash that seek to disrupt the movie's subtle messages and, more importantly, some of the intractable liberal notions of race that perpetuate racial inequity. The considerations raised in this volume will enrich critical conversations about how race and racism work in contemporary Euro-North American societies - whether these conversations occur in classrooms, boardrooms, or living rooms.

Sample Book Insights: #1 The legacy of racism is not hard to see. It begins early, with the exposure we receive from secondhand information about people who are different from us. #2 Omitted information can also lead to assumptions that may go unchallenged for a long time. For example, a White student who had never learned about any Black authors in her English classes was dismayed that she would have to teach about them. #3 Prejudice is a preconceived judgment or opinion, usually based on limited information. It is an integral part of our socialization, and it is not our fault. We need to take responsibility for our own behavior, and try to be more conscious of the stereotypes and messages that affect us. #4 Racism is not just prejudice, but a system of advantage based on race. It is not just a personal ideology, but a system that involves cultural messages and institutional policies and practices as well as the beliefs and actions of individuals.

Book excerpt: Fort Sill, located in the heart of the old Kiowa-Comanche Indian country in southwestern Oklahoma, is known to a modern generation as the Field Artillery School of the United States Army. To students of American frontier history, it is known as the focal point of one of the most interesting, dramatic, and sustained series of conflicts in the records of western warfare. From 1833 until 1875, in a theater of action extending from Kansas to Mexico, the strife was almost uninterrupted. The U.S. Army, militia of Kansas, Texas Rangers, and white pioneers and traders on the one hand were arrayed against the fierce and heroic bands of the Kiowas, Comanches, Cheyennes, Arapahoes, and Kiowa-Apaches on the other. The savage skirmishes with the southwestern Indians before the Civil War provided many army officers with a kind of training which was indispensable to them in that later, prolonged conflict. When hostilities ceased, men like Sherman, Sheridan, Dodge, Custer, and Grierson again resumed the harsh field of guerrilla warfare against their Indian foes, tough, hard, lusty, fighters, among whom the peace pipe had ceased to have more than a ceremonial significance. With the inauguration of the so-called Quaker Peace Policy during President Grant’s first administration, the hands of the army were tied. The Fort Sill reservation became a place of refuge for the marauding hands which went forth unmolested to train in Texas, Oklahoma, and Mexico. The toll in human life reached such proportions that the government finally turned the southwestern Indians over to the army for discipline, and a permanent settlement of the bands was achieved by 1875. From extensive research, conversations with both Indian and white eye witnesses, and his familiarity with Indian life and army affairs, Captain Nye has written an unforgettable account of these stirring time. The delineation of character and the reconstruction of colorful scenes, so often absent in historical writing, are to be found here in abundance. His Indians are made to live again: his scenes of post life could have been written only by an army man.

Book excerpt: Certain films seem to encapsulate perfectly the often abstract ethical situations that confront the media, from truth-telling and sensationalism to corporate control and social responsibility. Using these movies--including Ace in the Hole, All the President's Men, Network, and Twelve Angry Men--as texts, authors Howard Good and Michael Dillon demonstrate that, when properly framed and contextualized, movies can be a powerful lens through which to examine media practices. Moreover, cinema can present human moral conduct for evaluation and analysis more effectively than a traditional case study can. By presenting ethical dilemmas and theories within a dramatic framework, Media Ethics Goes to the Movies offers a unique perspective on what it means for media professionals to be both technically competent and morally informed.
