Book excerpt: Reading the World’s Stories is volume 5 in the Bridges to Understanding series of annotated international youth literature bibliographies sponsored by the United States Board on Books for Young People. USBBY is the United States chapter of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a Switzerland-based nonprofit whose mission is bring books and children together. The series promotes sharing international children’s books as a way to facilitate intercultural understanding and meet new literary voices. This volume follows Children’s Books from Other Countries (1998), The World though Children’s Books (2002), Crossing Boundaries with Children’s Books (2006), and Bridges to Understanding: Envisioning the World through Children’s Books (2011) and acts as a companion book to the earlier titles. Centered around the theme of the importance of stories, the guide is a resource for discovering more recent global books that fit many reading tastes and educational needs for readers aged 0-18 years. Essays by storyteller Anne Pellowski, author Beverley Naidoo, and academic Marianne Martens offer a variety of perspectives on international youth literature. This latest installment in the series covers books published from 2010-2014 and includes English-language imports as well as translations of children’s and young adult literature first published outside of the United States. These books are supplemented by a smaller number of culturally appropriate books from the US to help fill in gaps from underrepresented countries. The organization of the guide is geographic by region and country. All of the more than 800 entries are recommended, and many of the books have won awards or achieved other recognition in their home countries. Forty children’s book experts wrote the annotations. The entries are indexed by author, translator, illustrator, title, and subject. Back matter also includes international book awards, important organizations and research collections, and a selected directory of publishers known for publishing books from other countries.

Book excerpt: Printing Industry generates a wide range of products which require in every step of our everyday life. Starting from newspapers, magazines, books, post cards to memo pads and business order forms each are the products of printing industry. Printing is a process for reproducing text and image, typically with ink on paper using a printing press. There are various types of printing process for example offset printing, modern printing, gravure printing, flexographic printing etc. Offset printing is a widely used printing technique where the inked image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. When used in combination with the lithographic process, the offset technique employs a flat image carrier on which the image to be printed obtains ink from ink rollers, while the non printing area attracts a film of water, keeping the non printing areas ink free. Gravure printing is a printing technique, where the image to be printed is made up of small depressions in the surface of the printing plate. It is divided into three broad product areas; packaging printing, publication printing and speciality printing. Printing technology is often carried out as a large scale industrial process, and is an essential part of publishing and transaction printing. This is the age of hi fi, jets and computers. Rapid advancements in science and technology have made their impact on the printing industry of the world too. The old techniques of printing have become obsolete and made way for the new technology. The printing industry is just one example of an entire industry movement that is changing while keeping up with the development of new technologies. The proliferation of emerging technologies has dictated a rebirth of the printing industry. The Indian Printing Industry is well established and presently growing at 12% per annum. This book majorly deals with typographic technology, photo scanning systems, sequence of steps in the printing processes, size and scope of the printing industry, high volume printing technologies for the production of polymer electronic structures, inking system, film high contrast printing, principle of planographic printing, modern printing process, ink jet etc. The book contains the latest printing processes like web, gravure, flexo, security and offset printing. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to keep British magick alive. So we rescued a valuable book from a long-lost library, only it proved to be unusually... chatty. And it's got a foul mouth, too. What manner of weird magick is this? Somebody else thinks it's pretty interesting, too. Ancestria Magicka, they call themselves. Brand new. Big trouble. But why are they so interested in the book's creator? The woman died six hundred years ago. It's grave-robbers, necromancers and thieves all the way, and when things get that kind of crazy, there's only one thing to do. Call in the Toil and Trouble department.

Book excerpt: Here is the slim, stunning debut novel from the acclaimed author of Geek Love. Attic follows a young woman named Kay who has joined a cult-like organization that sells magazine subscriptions in small towns. When Kay tries to cash a customer’s bad check, she lands in jail, and Dunn’s visceral prose gives us a vivid, stream-of-consciousness depiction of the space in which she’s held. As Kay comes to know the other inmates, alliances and rivalries are formed, memories are recounted, and lives are changed. Based on Katherine Dunn’s own formative coming-of-age experiences, Attic was critically lauded when it was first published in 1970. Now, it stands as an extraordinary, indelible work from one of our most celebrated writers.

Early reader feedback on The Baptist: 'The writing is tight and very atmospheric. A chilling tale of real evil.' 'Dark and disturbing, but oh so good.' 'Dark and dingy, hot and steamy, everything you need from a novel in one swift download.' 'Well written and totally convincing, it provides an absorbing insight into the minds of some very strange characters. It's not without humour albeit of the dark kind.' 'Compelling and very, very different.' 'I was hooked right from the start and loved the dark and sinister quality of this tale.' From the author Ruby Barnes: The Baptist - he's clever, calculating and uncatchable. If you hear a knocking on your door don't let him in. John Baptist is cleansing a path for the Second Coming. ~ To deliberately drown your brother in a bathtub is a terrible, if clean, thing. Might it not be excused, if he is the manifest son of Satan? But that wasn’t the view of the Authorities, when they committed John to Fairfield Mental Institution. It wasn’t all bad; they let him keep his hair long and he met Dirty Mary. Like an institutionalised Bonnie and Clyde, they roamed the Victorian asylum and grounds, fulfilling their deluded fantasies. There were casualties. John and Mary loved, lost and left. Thank God for Care in the Community. ~ When God shines a light, it burns. Feargal and his friends relight my fire. The last prophet must wander, cleanse. I am not the One. I am merely sent to prepare a way for the One. I am The Baptist.
