Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How far can a man go seeking vengeance before it destroys his own soul? Software engineer, Nathaniel Myer, is a restless suburbanite whose world is shattered when chance places him in the path of a sociopath with the face of a saint. Nathaniel brushes off the fleeting encounter but in the hours that follow, he falls asleep in his wife’s arms and awakes to unimaginable horror. Nate battles back through frailty, grief, guilt, and ultimately rage when time after time, the four tattooed suspects who destroyed his life skip ahead of the police then completely through their fingers. Finding the men known as Number One, Two, Three, and Four becomes Nate’s sole reason for being until his obsession destroys what little he has left. On the street, owning nothing but the clothes on his back and a crumpled wad of papers he got off a crooked PI, more than ever Nate cares about little beyond his single-minded crusade. Fate has other plans, however, because when a cantankerous old army veteran with strange blackouts, an emotionally disturbed kid with too many piercings, and a feisty mother and child hiding from their case worker all need a hero, Nate is somehow in the right place at the right time, and the man he used to be can’t do other than help them. As long as none of his wards depend on him long term, because Nate doesn’t plan on sticking around anywhere once his crusade ends. But staying sharp and playing reluctant guardian lands him squarely in reach of the very animals he’s hunting and, most of all, their clever and elusive leader. Then abruptly, Nate’s life takes another series of blinding turns and the justice he’s sought so long is on the line. But how can he risk letting a habitual killer smile and slip away again? Or must he, Nate, become the ultimate bait and sacrifice?

Book excerpt: Dred Scott and his landmark Supreme Court case are ingrained in the national memory, but he was just one of multitudes who appealed for their freedom in courtrooms across the country. Appealing for Liberty is the most comprehensive study to give voice to these African Americans, drawing from more than 2,000 suits and from the testimony of more than 4,000 plaintiffs from the Revolutionary era to the Civil War. Through the petitions, evidence, and testimony introduced in these court proceedings, the lives of the enslaved come sharply and poignantly into focus, as do many other aspects of southern society such as the efforts to preserve and re-unite black families. This book depicts in graphic terms, the pain, suffering, fears, and trepidations of the plaintiffs while discussing the legal systemlawyers, judges, juries, and testimonythat made judgments on their "causes," as the suits were often called. Arguments for freedom were diverse: slaves brought suits claiming they had been freed in wills and deeds, were born of free mothers, were descendants of free white women or Indian women; they charged that they were illegally imported to some states or were residents of the free states and territories. Those who testified on their behalf, usually against leaders of their communities, were generally white. So too were the lawyers who took these cases, many of them men of prominence, such as Francis Scott Key. More often than not, these men were slave owners themselves-- complicating our understanding of race relations in the antebellum period. A majority of the cases examined here were not appealed, nor did they create important judicial precedent. Indeed, most of the cases ended at the county, circuit, or district court level of various southern states. Yet the narratives of both those who gained their freedom and those who failed to do so, and the issues their suits raised, shed a bold and timely light on the history of race and liberty in the "land of the free."

Full of unforgettable characters, quirky humor, fast action, and delicious romance, C.J. Archer's Freak House Series is now available as an exclusive boxed set. Get all 3 trilogies that make up the FREAK HOUSE series at a lower price than buying them individually! THE 1ST FREAK HOUSE TRILOGY (Contains THE WRONG GIRL, PLAYING WITH FIRE, HEART BURN): It's customary for Gothic romance novels to include a mysterious girl locked in the attic. Hannah Smith just wishes she wasn't that girl. As a narcoleptic and the companion to an earl's daughter with a strange affliction of her own, Hannah knows she's lucky to have a roof over her head and food in her belly when so many orphans starve on the streets. Yet freedom is something Hannah longs for. She did not, however, want her freedom to arrive in the form of kidnapping. Taken by handsome Jack Langley to a place known as Freak House, she finds herself under the same roof as a mad scientist, his niece, a mute servant and Jack, a fire starter with a mysterious past. They assure Hannah she is not a prisoner and that they want to help her. The problem is, they think she's the earl's daughter. What will they do when they discover they took the wrong girl? THE 2ND FREAK HOUSE TRILOGY (Contains THE MEMORY KEEPER, SEARED WITH SCARS, EDGE OF DARKNESS): Charity Evans wants nothing more than to leave her troubled past behind and start afresh. The teacher at a London school for orphans is encouraged to have her memories blocked by hypnotist Samuel Gladstone, but when they experience visions with an unknown third person, they realize the past can never be truly erased. Now her past is returning to haunt Charity all over again. Samuel is determined to help her, but how can a woman who trusts no man trust a hypnotist? And what dark secrets changed the charming gentleman into a desperate one who'll do anything to keep those secrets buried? THE 3RD FREAK HOUSE TRILOGY (Contains GHOST GIRL, BANISHED, MY SOUL TO TAKE): Cara Moreau is dying from a supernatural curse. Her only chance of survival lies with the warrior, an enigmatic man who comes from a realm "in between." Quin St. Clair lived hundreds of years ago, but now exists solely to protect the world he once called home. That's all he will tell Cara, the woman he must keep alive by remaining close to her. Very close. But Cara is determined to discover more answers as she grows to like her warrior. While they search for the book of spells and the cure contained within its pages, their feelings for one another can no longer be denied. But what will happen when Cara is cured and Quin's assignment is complete? And can she trust this mysterious man with the book if they find it? As friends and family from the previous Freak House novels help them, and old and new foes vie for power, Quin and Cara must not allow their feelings to get in the way of their task. Or Cara's life, and Quin's afterlife, may be cut short. What readers are saying about the Freak House books: "This is one of my favourite books I've read this year... I can't praise it enough... The real stand out for this was the writing and the character voice." - The Moonlight Library "The writing in The Wrong Girl was beautiful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book to focus on relations between Indians and emigrants on the overland trails, Michael L. Tate shows that such encounters were far more often characterized by cooperation than by conflict. Having combed hundreds of unpublished sources and Indian oral traditions, Tate finds Indians and Anglo-Americans continuously trading goods and news with each other, and Indians providing various forms of assistance to overlanders. Tate admits that both sides normally followed their own best interests and ethical standards, which sometimes created distrust. But many acts of kindness by emigrants and by Indians can be attributed to simple human compassion. Not until the mid-1850s did Plains tribes begin to see their independence and cultural traditions threatened by the flood of white travelers. As buffalo herds dwindled and more Indians died from diseases brought by emigrants, violent clashes between wagon trains and Indians became more frequent, and the first Anglo-Indian wars erupted on the plains. Yet, even in the 1860s, Tate finds, friendly encounters were still the rule. Despite thousands of mutually beneficial exchanges between whites and Indians between 1840 and 1870, the image of Plains Indians as the overland pioneers’ worst enemies prevailed in American popular culture. In explaining the persistence of that stereotype, Tate seeks to dispel one of the West’s oldest cultural misunderstandings.

Book excerpt: “We traveled this forenoon over the roughest and most desolate piece of ground that was ever made,” wrote Amelia Knight during her 1853 wagon train journey to Oregon. Some of the parties who traveled with Knight were propelled by religious motives. Hannah King, an Englishwoman and Mormon convert, was headed for Salt Lake City. Her cultured, introspective diary touches on the feelings of sensitive people bound together in a stressful undertaking. Celinda Hines and Rachel Taylor were Methodists seeking their new Canaan in Oregon. Also Oregon-bound in 1853 were Sarah (Sally) Perkins, whose minimalist record cuts deep, and Eliza Butler Ground and Margaret Butler Smith, sisters who wrote revealing letters after arriving. Going to California in 1854 were Elizabeth Myrick, who wrote a no-nonsense diary, and the teenage Mary Burrell, whose wit and exuberance prevail.
